HOWIE DOROUGH: Mentioned On Neverest: A Look @t Toronto's Newest Band Making It Big

With a natural talent to perform and a drive to reach for the best, the band Neverest is one you'll be hearing a lot of, so get ready!

There’s no better way to spend a weekday afternoon than on a video shoot with Toronto’s hottest up-and-coming band. Confident, genuine and down-to-earth, one would never guess the members of Neverest are on their first video shoot. Music is in their blood and they are out to take the music industry by storm.

The excitement of what’s ahead is evident by just looking at them. Finishing each other’s sentences and eager to tell their story, their bond is one that goes beyond just being members of a band. “It’s a family already and a very close-knit family”, says bassist Paul Loduca. Their friendship also extends to the people they’ve been able to work with. “That goes with the entire team, writers, producers, managers, it’s a team effort”, adds lead vocalist Spyros ‘Spee’ Chalkiotis.

The Making of Neverest
The pop band consisting of, Spyros ‘Spee’ Chalkiotis (lead vocals), Paul Loduca (bass), Mike Klose (guitar/keys), and Brendan Colameco (drums), individually came from various musical backgrounds before coming together to form Neverest. Frontman, Spee-a music major from York Universtiy, began putting the band together a few years ago, when it not only consisted of other members, but also had a much different style to it. With the original band drifting apart, Spee was on a mission to find new members. He soon recruited long time friend and fellow musician, Mike Klose, a classically trained pianist, bassist and guitar player.

In 2007, Spee and Klose started working with producer Mike ‘MK’ Kiofos of Vic Park Productions. The boys worked hard developing a writing and recording process that would ultimately change the direction and sound of the band’s music. As Neverest evolved, so did the roster of talent that would help them out. Mike Kiofos’ Vic Park partner, Angelo ‘Levi’ Themelkos came in, helping create more songs. The band’s increasing drive would soon after attract the attention of 3 Street Management and the support of some of the music industry’s very best-Howie Dorough (Backstreet Boys) and CJ Huyer (3Deep).

With a collaboration and support system all new bands only dream of, Neverest knew they had to complete the band’s line-up. In March 2010, Timmins native, Brendan Colameco joined in after seeing an ad on Craigslist. The seasoned drummer responded to the ad, thinking it would be a great opportunity to gain more experience, never imagining he’d become part of the band full time.

Completing and joining the band in May 2010 was Paul Loduca. The talented, self-taught guitarist was part of another band at the time, coming across Neverest’s demo through mutual friend Mike Kiofos. One song is all it took for Loduca to get hooked and spontaneously ask to join the band. After meeting the rest of the members, the connection was immediate. Loduca left his existing band and officially joined Neverest- and so it began.

'About Us' - Neverest's First Single
Neverest’sdebut single, 'About Us' hits radio in early October. The band hopes the song will be one that anyone who’s had to balance a relationship and a career can relate to. And it’s definitely going to be one of those songs you won’t be able to get enough of. The video for the single is directed by one of the very best in the industry, International Award-winning Director, RT of The NE Inc. “He’s unreal; with all the lights we’re going to have, you’re going to be able to see us from space”, laughs Spee. And it’s going to have “a really, really kick-ass performance shot”, adds Loduca.

One on One With Neverest
Suite 101 had the chance to catch up with Neverest on the set of their first music video in Toronto.

Q: Why the name Neverest?

A: It was an accumulation of names and ideas. We basically created our own word with Neverest. We liked what the word Everest symbolized and then through the letter N in front of it. Basically it means we’re never going to rest until we achieve our Everest, whatever that may be

Q: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your first single, “About Us”?

A: The lyrics tell a story about love and a breakup; about being in a relationship and then hitting it big as a musician and your focus becomes divided. We hope this song can be relatable to anyone who’s been in a relationship and having their career take off at the same time. At the end of the day, we’re always trying to making it about us, whether it’s about the relationship or the crowd and the band

Q: The single is co-produced by producer/songwriter, Anthony M. Jones, who’s worked with people like Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, Ashanti, -what was it like working with him?

A: We’re so excited. He’s a legend. As soon as we met him, everything was based on everyone’s energy and vibe. His addition has changed our sound a lot, as soon as he came in it was off the hook. He’s so inspiring

Q: The video for “About Us” is being directed by the very talented RT from The NE Inc., what’s it feel like to be working with an award-winning director for your first video?

A: It’s a privilege and flattering. We’re being surrounded by the best and to be starting off being a nobody and surrounded by people who have made something of themselves and are kings of the industry, it’s unbelievable

Q: Can you tell us about the concept behind the video you’re shooting today?

A: It’s going to be a bit of us on tour, on a tour bus, us going through the emotions of touring and the whole vibe and scene that goes with it and at the same time showing the romance between a couple and the difficulties of being apart

Q: You guys are working with some of the music industries best for your upcoming album, including the support of Howie Dorough from the Backstreet Boys. Did you ever think it would get to that point?

A: It’s so surreal. We had the chance to hang out with him and the Backstreet Boys last time they were here playing a show and just to talk to him and have him give us advice and be excited about working with us as well, it’s unbelievable. He’s a great guy and treated us like family and to see someone of that stature to be so humble is inspiring for us

Q: What would you say sets you guys apart from other bands?

A: The teamwork. The way we function as a team is family oriented. Neverest is not just us four, its everybody that’s involved in some way or another. And, our music stylistically has something for everybody

With their music career about to take on new heights, this pop band is the real deal. And don’t let the word pop throw you off. “Everyone can relate to it somehow. With pop we can all put our influences whether it be jazz, hip hop, rock, funk, whatever it is you can put your twist on it and make it yours and that’s what’s beautiful about pop”, explains Neverest.

Natural talent, great energy, and the ability to blend different genres of music effortlessly, Neverest will bring a new and much needed sound to the current music scene. Be sure to check them out when their single hits radio this month.
