Millions of websites die as Geocities goes offline
Was a bust after Yahoo bought it for $3 billion
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The place where many people hosted their very first website is going, going... almost gone. Geocities is dying a quiet death this week.
Animated gifs, rudimentary HTML, and midi files... all part of a pre-Facebook internet where one of the major players was Geocities. The site allowed anyone to build their own web page for free and alloted a small amount of space for photos and documents. Yahoo paid $3 billion for it 1999, but never made much back from those annoying pop-up and banner ads. Techies claim Yahoo failed to change with the times leaving their investment as a graveyard of broken links. As of this week, Geocities is being shut down, taking with it millions of sites including a Backstreet Boys fan page made by News1130's web reporter in 1997.
