THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Back On Track?

Are you a fan of current mainstream singers such as Lady Gaga? If you are, how long do you think the singers’ popularity will last? If you think that they will be famous forever, reconsider. After all, many past popular singers and bands like the Backstreet Boys lost their spark as time went on.

The popular late ‘90s boy band, Backstreet Boys, still brings nostalgia to some adolescents and adults. “I Want It That Way” and “As Long As You Love Me” are unforgettable songs that still bring back memories. Unlike many other boy bands from the past, Backstreet Boys has not dissolved yet. The band recently released the album, This is Us. However, not many people acknowledge that the Backstreet Boys are still alive.

Senior Sadie Lai expressed, “I don’t really hear about them anymore,” while sophomore Sharon Mak asked, “Isn’t the band dead already?”

People who know that the Backstreet Boys are still around generally do not view the Backstreet Boys as significant figures anymore. Junior Kellie Su listened to Backstreet Boys’ songs when she was in elementary school. “I don’t listen to them anymore. It’s not like I don’t like them, but they do not produce the music that I currently prefer to listen to,” Su said.

Freshman Kara Chen also listened to Backstreet Boys’ songs when she was young. Though she was a fan of Backstreet Boys in the past, she no longer feels that the Backstreet Boys band is as special as before. She said, “I only listen to them when they’re on the radio, but I don’t plan on buying their new album.”

Though Backstreet Boys was such a mainstream band in the past, the boy band seems to be less popular than before, especially among many students in George Washington High School. Perhaps singers will lose their spark eventually, even if they may be really popular now. Watch out Lady Gaga!
