THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Backstreet's Back! And So Is The River Festival

Maybe, mmm, headlined by Bret Michaels of Poison?

And maybe have the Backstreet Boys perform, too? Hmm? Hmmmm?

Now imagine me hopping and pointing. That was my initial reaction to the Boise Music Festival, coming July 24 to Ann Morrison Park.

Exactly what demographic is Peak Broadcasting - the radio station group organizing this festival - trying to attract with Bret Michaels and the Backstreet Boys? The Downtown bar cougar demo?

Actually, with more than 40 local, regional and national acts on five stages, and Michaels - a huge crossover celebrity recovering from that ubiquitous brain hemorrhage - this will be the summer's biggest people-watching event.

"With the amount of bands that we have, there's going to be something for everybody there," says Kevin Godwin, vice president of Peak. "We have no doubt about that."

But why the Boise Music Festival? Why now?

"This is really to bring something cool in the summer to the park," Godwin explains. "We just felt there was a need there."

This is the first of what Peak wants to make an annual event. You'll find details about this year's festival at boisemusicfestival.com. There are additional national acts such as Green River Ordinance and Alex Band of The Calling. Beer gardens. A barbecue competition. Tons of vendors and shopping. Family activities.

"We think there's going to be somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 people," Godwin says.
Woaaaah, Nelly. (Actually, maybe they should add rapper Nelly to the bill.) Them's some big prediction numbers.

Even though it's free, it will be a ticketed event. Peak radio stations - Mix 106, Lite FM, Kiss FM, etc. - will begin giving away tickets May 31. If you somehow don't get one, I have a feeling they'll have one for you at the gate.

Lots of people will poke fun at the headliners. How can we not? But when something's free, you really can't bag on it with any credibility or enthusiasm.

Besides, this is basically a Boise River Festival that only lasts a single day. You gotta admit: There's a little bit of genius in that approach.
