THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Are Back Again, This Time @t The Apollo

MANHATTAN — Boy bands from the 1990s haven't exactly been a staple of the Apollo Theater's longstanding musical tradition — until now.

The Backstreet Boys will be performing along with Art Alexakis of Everclear and Peter Buffett during DoSomething.org's annual awards at the Apollo Theater on Monday night.

DoSomething.org is a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire and recognize young people who make a difference in their communities.

The nonprofit organization will honor VH1 President Tom Calderone, filmmaker Brett Ratner and Icema Gibbs, and five nominees under the age of 25.

Each of the young nominees received $10,000 grants already and one grand prize winner will a $100,000 community grant, according to the organization's website.

Most of the nominees were were in grade school or junior high school when the Backstreet Boys were making teenage girls scream with glee across the country.

However, the late 1990s boy band is back in the limelight. They released their seventh album last year and appeared on the CBS' "Early Show" on Monday morning to kick off the network's summer concert series.

The group, made up of Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and AJ McLean, tours to sold-out concerts filled with fans, according to CBS. That's despite losing one of their original members, Kevin Richardson, who left the group in 2006.

The Backstreet Boys have sold more than 100 million records, made six platinum albums, and been adored by legions of fans for more than a decade.

"For a while the Backstreet Boys — that was the next Beatle mania," Bill Werde, of Billboard magazine told CBS News. "There's only a few bands in history that have created that kind of a frenzy."

The show is slated to begin at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
