THIS IS US TOUR: Backstreet's Back! Not Right

While this year's edition of Rock In India has Backstreet Boys as their headline act, rock crazy Bangaloreans are a disgruntled lot

Rock In India, one of the premier rock festivals, which has had bands like Megadeth and Iron Maiden as the headline acts, is drawing the ire of many metalheads in town. The organisers officially announced last week that they're bringing down Backstreet Boys and Richard Marx to Bangalore on February 22.

Bangalore's rock fans, however, seem to be wondering how these acts could become a part of a rock festival. While organiser Venkat Vardhan had earlier made a press statement that this move was to draw a larger chunk of crowd, Bangaloreans seem to think otherwise.

Thermal and a Quarter frontman, Bruce Lee Mani, believes that while both the acts are big brands to draw large crowds, they don't fit into an event like Rock In India. "The past years have seen acts like Megadeth and Machinehead. While they used to draw limited crowds, they kept to the essence of the festival. Having an act like Backstreet Boys should mean re-branding the event," says Bruce.

Kryptos, who played alongside Iron Maiden last year at the same event, seem to be having quite a laugh. Lead guitarist Nolan Lewis bursts into a giggle as he says, "Nowadays who even listens to them? Even the young kids today stay away from Backstreet Boys. Everyone is in quite a shock, for it defeats the purpose of the event, which was to promote rock and metal in the country."

The official Facebook fan page of the event has been abuzz with activity. All the fans seem to feel that this is a suicidal move as far as helping rock grow in the city goes. One of the members, Nikhil Mario Philips, writes, "All I can say is, this is a let down for hardcore headbangers. No one wants to listen to metrosexuals wearing sunglasses in the night singing songs with no personal talent. I won't be attending Rock In India this time. I'm sure there are many who share my opinion."

Irrespective of what the rockers think, the verdict seems to be in; Backstreet Boys and Richard Marx will be the final acts.
