Backstreet Boys A.J. McLean got engaged to girlfriend Rochelle Karidis on Friday, his rep confirmed to MTV News. The singer proposed to Karidis onstage at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's Wasted Space nightclub where he was celebrating his 32nd birthday at a party for the Web site Naughty America at the AVN Adult Entertainment, People reported.
Shortly after midnight, McLean reportedly got onstage at midnight and invited Karidis to join him.
"He got up onstage and the DJ turned the music off. He asked her to come up onstage, and he got down on his knee and she squatted down with him," an eyewitness told People. A photo from the event shows McLean kneeling and holding out a ring. "He asked her and she said yes and hugged him. He took the ring out of his pocket and put it on her hand."
A source told E! Online that McLean bought the engagement ring only a few hours earlier at the Hard Rock's jewelry store, Rocks. "She seemed very surprised and didn't seem to know why he was getting onstage," the witness said. "Even his friends were shocked. They all knew he was going to propose but didn't think he would do it tonight."
An Us Weekly source added, "AJ dropped down to one knee and said that they had been dating for a long time and [he] wanted to know if she would marry him. Of course she said 'yes,' and they left the club shortly after this happened."
According to E!, the pair celebrated afterwards at another Hard Rock club, Vanity.
