THIS IS US TOUR: Backstreet Boys Finally Know What They Want

ROTTERDAM – The American boyband the Backstreet Boys has been a garante for sold out venue’s and screeming teenage girls for 16 years. NU.nl asked A.J. McLean and Brian Littrell about the advantages and the disadvatages of being in the spotlights all these years.

McLean doesn’t have to think long about this question: The big lack of privacy.”I also want to lay but naked on the beach sometimes, but we can’t do that. Before you know it, you’re all over the internet.”

But naked
Littrell makes a dirty face. “He yack, now I’m picturing you in your naked but, thanks men. But you’re have been naked on the internet for a long time” McLean looks Littrell shoked. “Yes, on those photoshoped fake pictures”, explains Littrell. “Don’t ever google yourself AJ, that won’t make you happy.”

Now it’s McLean turn to make a dirty face. “Yack, that there are people that make those kind of fake pictures I don’t understand. What’s the fun in that?”

Family
Littrell especially finds the lack of time for friens and family a downside to be famous. Although the band has a salution to that now, they bring the family on the tour. His son is also running arround backstage showing of his new wooden shoes. They are a few sizes to big, but that doesn’t matter to him. “Nice hè?”, he shoulds to everyone who wants to hear, while sticking his feet up in the air.

Also the 6 month old baby of Howie is passing by on Howie’s arm on there way to the playroom. “Howie has a daddy-day today”, McLean explains.

Control
“A big advantage of our carreers is now that we have a lot more control over what we do then in the early days”, shares Littrell. “We are more free. During the early years everything got planed for us, now we can plan ourselves. Howie has a yough child and he wants to spent as much time with him as possible. That been taken care of in our schedule.”

This new freedom you can also hear in their new record, This Is Us. “Our previous two albums didn’t have a direction, there where a lot of diverent styles on there.” “We didn’t really know what kind of music we wanted to make, thats we we took diffrent kind of songs. From gitarpop till hip hop en even R&B, just to try it all. We don’t do that anymore, we now know what we want. This is our sound, that why we
named it this way”

Underwear
Not only the bandmembers, but also the fans have matured over the years. “And with that became a little calmer”, Littrell smiles. “It’s not raining underwear on the stage anymore. My mom has to buy her own underwear again!” “Do you know what I miss about the early years of the Backstreet Boys? My hair!”,
McLean suddenly remembers, and he points to to his head while smiling.

Lucky
“It was 16 was years of really hard work but I still find ourselves the 4 most lucky
guys on earth”, says Littrell. “Maybe we can close ourselves in a couple of years, so that a couple of new boys can do the heavy work?”, says McLean. “Yeah, that might be a good idea cause I hope to do this for a very long time!”, finds Littrell. “Although it all depents on if our fans still want us then.”

Ahoy
When about an hour later the lights go of in Ahoy and the spotlights turn on and the boys get out on stage, they can be sure that they don’t have to wory about that for a while. The crowed, mostly female, produces such loud noise that the first part of their hit Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) almost can’t be heard. Ahead for the next 16t years!
